Sharing is caring!

Our basic Coleslaw Recipe is just so simple to make, you can throw this together in just a few minutes and it only uses 5 ingredients.

It tastes great, low cost way of squeezing more veggies into your diet. And it’s a great side dish for chicken, burgers or BBQ food.

Coleslaw RECIPE Ingredients

  • White Cabbage – classic coleslaw base, although you can make it with red cabbage also or a mix.
  • Carrots – wouldn’t be coleslaw without carrots.
  • Onion – you can use brown onion, red onion or it you don’t want it too ‘oniony’ you can use scallions or even chives to just add a touch of onion.
  • Mayonnaise – we use full fat mayo, but our homemade slaw is great with low-fat mayo or even Greek yogurt (or a mix)
  • English Mustard – you can swap this for Dijon if you prefer.

How To Make Our Coleslaw Recipe

  1. Shred the cabbage finely – remove any tough thick stalks.
  2. Peel and chop the carrots into matchsticks
  3. Finely slice the onion.
  4. Tip all the vegetables into a bowl.
  5. Make the dressing – mix the mustard into the mayonnaise (season with salt and pepper if using) and then tip the mixture onto the vegetables and stir everything together with a fork to coat.

Add Extra Vegetables – when you make our homemade coleslaw recipe feel free to add in any extras you like – try some finely sliced celery, apples, chopped broccoli or use red cabbage instead of white.

Dressing – we’ve given you a low cost basic coleslaw recipe but if you want to be a little extra, go right ahead! You can make a more indulgent dressing, use sour cream or creme fraiche mixed in with the mayonnaise. You can also add extra flavour with fresh herbs. You can even stir through handfuls of grated Cheddar cheese.

Coleslaw Toppers – yes coleslaw toppers are a thing! Try sprinkling over bacon bits homemade croutons, crushed peanuts or seeds.

⭐ If you have a food processor use the grater/slicer blade to shred the cabbage and carrots for speed.

⭐Leftovers can be stored in an air tight container for up to 2 days in the refrigerator.
