Our Most Popular Alternative – Air Fryer Ham And Cheese Toastie

Equipment Needed

  • Air Fryer – we now use a Ninja Foodi Max Dual Zone Air Fryer – the 9.5 litre two drawer cooking space is BRILLIANT when you’re cooking for a family or cook larger portions.
  • Bread board
  • Cheese grater
  • Butter knife
  • Small bowl
  • Teaspoon
  • Tablespoon
  • Tongs  just makes it easier to lift the cheese and onion toastie from the air fryer basket. I’d definitely recommend you get yourself a set of silicone tongs if you do lots of air frying. They just make it so much easier to remove or flip food. Plus they don’t scratch the air fryer non-stick coating.

Ingredients For Cheese And Chutney Toastie In The Air Fryer

You’ll just need a handful of delicious ingredients to make these cheese and chutney toasties in the air fryer taste amazing!

ingredients for cheese and chutney air fryer toasties on a white table - include white bread, grated cheese, butter, mayonnaise and chutney all in little bowls
  • 2 Slices Thick white bread – for making cheese and onion toasties, we always use a rustic bloomer style bread. But you can use different types of bread if you prefer. Sourdough bread is delicious for toasties.
  • 2 tsp Butter – toasties should always be made with a layer of butter (proper salted butter) they just make the outside of the grilled cheese sandwich crisp up deliciously in a way that plant based spreads never seem to do. Honestly, you don’t want to skip this!
  • 1 tbsp Mayonnaise – spreading a good thick layer mayo onto the bread, helps the sandwich stick together better as it air fries, and is just super tasty.
  • 40g Grated Cheddar Cheese – Cheddar is a really good melting cheese, that works so well in toasties and grilled cheese sandwiches. We use a nice sharp and tangy mature Cheddar. You can swap this for any type of cheese you prefer.
  • 1 tbsp Chutney – when it comes to chutney, we like a Ploughman’s pickle style chutney on a cheese toastie, but its also great made with roast tomato chutney and chili chutney.

Tasty Tips From Our Kitchen To Make YouCheese And Onion Toastie In Air Fryer Perfect Every Time!

Don’t skip the mayo! It’s key! The mayo layer is the best way of keeping the sandwich stuck together in the air fryer, don’t skip it. We’ve tried and tested, and this is the BEST method!

Keep an eye on the toastie – check your toastie for the perfect golden brown crispiness from 5 minutes on. That way you’ll catch it at the level of toasty golden brown crispiness you like.

Be generous with the cheese – don’t skimp on the cheese, you want melty, delicious ooze!

Add extra ingredients – if you want to add some extras, you go right ahead and add little bits and pieces of your favourite sandwich fillers.

Try different types of cheeses – you can switch the Cheddar for any cheese you prefer. Or use a combination of cheeses. Try Swiss cheese, havarti, Edam, provolone, Monterey jack, Red Leicester or a crumbly Lancashire.

Try different types of chutney – you can use whatever chutney is ticking your boxes! Tomato and chilli, roasted vegetables, caramelised onion. Just splatter on your favourite.
