Best Butter Braised Savoy Cabbage Recipe

Butter braised cabbage is one of our favourite ways to cook Savoy cabbage. Lush green cabbage, slowly cooked down in garlicky butter with just a sprinkling of nutmeg. It’s so good!

Our simple Savoy cabbage recipe is really easy to make and totally delicious to eat.

A great vegetable side dish for alongside your roast dinner, or with grilled meat or fish.

Butter braised Savoy cabbage is particularly good stirred through pasta with and handful of grated Parmesan cheese and some black pepper. Simple, and completely delicious.

  • Chopping board
  • Vegetable knife
  • Large pan with a lid
  • Wooden spoon

Braised Savoy Cabbage Ingredients

You’ll only need a handful of ingredients to make our simple Savoy cabbage recipe.

  • 1 Savoy cabbage
  • 50g butter
  • 1 large clove garlic
  • pinch grated nutmeg
  • Splash of boiling water from the kettle – if you want a more luxurious cabbage dish, add a splash of white wine instead of water.

How To Make Butter Braised Savoy Cabbage

It’s super easy to make our delicious garlicky greens recipe!

Step One – prepare the cabbage

  • Chop the cabbage and wash it thoroughly in salted water.

Step Two – melt the garlicky butter

  • Melt the butter over a low heat in the saucepan, grate in the garlic and stir it into the melting butter.

Step Three – cook the butter braised Savoy cabbage

  • Tip the chopped cabbage into the garlicky butter, add just a splash of boiling water from the kettle (around 1 tablespoon full) then season well with salt and black pepper.
  • Put the lid on to the pan and cook over a low heat for around 20 minutes – stirring often and adding more butter or water if it starts to look a little dry.
  • Cook until the cabbage is tender to your liking. Then remove and serve.

Delicious Ways To Eat Garlicky Savoy Cabbage

This is one of our favourite ways to cook Savoy cabbage and there’s loads of tasty ways to eat it too!

Cabbage for roast dinner

Use the garlicky greens to serve up with a roast dinner. Cabbage is delicious with roast pork or beef and the garlicky butter combines deliciously with roast dinner gravy.

Butter braised Savoy cabbage and bacon pasta

Cook up a few slices of bacon and snip into bitesized pieces, stir through the garlicky cabbage – then stir through freshly cooked pasta. Add a handful of grated Parmesan and a drizzle of olive oil and some cracked black pepper to serve.

Bruschetta topping

Load the butter braised Savoy cabbage onto Italian toasted bread, add some Parmesan shavings and black pepper.

Roast ham with mashed potatoes and braised Savoy cabbage

Sometimes simple is the best thing – some great roast ham sliced, alongside some delicious buttery mash goes great with our garlicky Savoy cabbage.

Ingredients

  • 1 Savoy cabbage
  • 50g butter
  • 1 clove garlic
  • pinch nutmeg
  • splash of boiling water

  1. Remove the outer leaves and chop the cabbage and wash it thoroughly in salted water.
  2. Melt the butter over a low heat in the saucepan, grate in the garlic and stir it into the melting butter.
  3. Tip the chopped cabbage into the garlicky butter, add just a splash of boiling water from the kettle (around 1 tablespoon full) then season well with salt and black pepper.
  4. Put the lid on to the pan and cook over a low heat for around 20 minutes – stirring often and adding more butter or water if it starts to look a little dry.
  5. Cook until the cabbage is tender to your liking. Then remove and serve.
