Bolognese Pasta Bake Ingredients

You’ll just need a handful of simple, tasty ingredients to make this delicious pasta bake recipe.

bolognese pasta bake ingredients on a white table - minced beef, grated cheese, chopped red onion, chopped garlic, passata, olive oil and fusilli pasta
  • 1 tbs olive oil – you can use sunflower oil or rapeseed oil if you prefer.
  • 1 red onion – diced
  • 1 clove garlic – finely chopped
  • 500g lean beef mince
  • 800g passata – choose a flavoured passata – I use one with Italian herbs. Using passata instead of chopped tomatoes makes the pasta bake sauce smoother and richer.
  • 350g pasta shapes – I tend to use fusilli but it’s also delicious made with penne or conchiglie pasta shells.
  • 60g Cheddar cheese – grated

Equipment Needed To Cook This Pasta Bake

  • Chopping board
  • Sharp vegetable knife
  • 2 Saucepans – one for the pasta, one for the bolognese sauce
  • Wooden spoon (or other spoon for cooking)
  • Tablespoon
  • Colander
  • Oven proof dish – or just use a roasting tin
  • Grater

How To Make Bolognese Pasta Bake

  • Gently fry the onions and garlic – add the olive oil to the saucepan and fry the onions and garlic for around 5 minutes until softening.

  • Brown the beef mince – tip the mince into the saucepan and break it up using a wooden spoon. Fry the mince with the garlic and onions until it is browning.

  • Add the passata – tip the passata into the beef mince and onion mixture and stir well. Bring the sauce to the boil and then simmer over a low heat for 20 minutes with the lid on.

Cooks Note!

I know it may look like you’ve put in too much tomato and that the bolognese sauce will be too liquid but it’s absolutely fine. When making a pasta bake you really do want just a little too much sauce.

A saucy pasta bake is much tastier than a dry one.

  • Cook the pasta – when the bolognese sauce has been cooking for 10 minutes put the pasta on to cook. Cook the pasta as per the packet instructions and then drain using a colander.
  • Preheat the oven to 180C / 400F / Gas Mark 6
  • Turn off the heat under the bolognese sauce – it should be looking like the sauce below!

How To Cook Mince Pasta Bake In The Oven

  • Tip the pasta mixed with sauce into an oven proof dish

  • Scatter over the grated cheese – I’ve just used grated Cheddar but feel free to add in some grated mozzarella or Parmesan here too if you like.

  • Put the pasta bake into the oven and bake for around 15 minutes or until the cheese is melting and bubbling on top. If you’re serving the pasta bake alongside a garlic baguette, whack that in the oven now too.

  • Once the pasta bake is cooked remove from the oven – I usually leave the pasta bake for around 5-10 minutes before serving up as it does tend to be super hot!

Can I Freeze Bolognese Pasta Bake?

We think it’s best to just freeze the bolognese sauce and cook the pasta as you want to make it into a pasta bake. Frozen pasta tends to have a weird texture and doesn’t taste as nice.

When freezing the bolognese sauce tip it into a freezer proof container and allow to cool completely before freezing.

It will keep good in the freezer for around 3 months.

When defrosting to use – do so thoroughly and reheat thoroughly.
