Caprese Skewers

Sharing is caring!

Our Caprese Skewers are a fantastic mini appetiser that’s quick and easy to make. All the flavours of our favourite Caprese Salad, these skewers have creamy mozzarella, juicy cherry tomatoes and fresh basil leaves drizzled with a sweet Balsamic dressing.

These Caprese Skewers combine juicy cherry tomatoes with basil, fresh Italian mozzarella and sweet Balsamic dressing for an appetiser that’s both super easy to make and looks really impressive on a platter.

I make these to go alongside drinks at summer BBQs just as a little appetiser whilst we wait for the BBQ food to cook. They’re always super popular and disappear in literally minutes so you might want to double up on this recipe!

Caprese Skewers Ingredients

  • 20 Cherry Tomatoes – sliced into halves
  • 20 Basil leaves
  • 2 tbs Balsamic Dressing

Equipment Needed To Make This Recipe

  • Chopping board
  • Sharp vegetable knife
  • 20 Cocktail sticks
  • Serving platter

How To Make Caprese Skewers

  • Slice the tomatoes into halves – you can keep them whole if you prefer but by slicing them, the sweet tomato juices drip deliciously onto the mozzarella.
  • Thread the skewers – slide half a tomato, a mozzarella ball, another half of tomato, a basil leaf and then another mozzarella ball. Arrange them onto your serving platter.
  • Drizzle with Balsamic dressing – just before serving drizzle over the Balsamic dressing.

Should You Marinate The Mozzarella?

This is entirely down to preference – you can marinate the mozzarella balls in pesto prior to threading onto the skewers. But I think the Balsamic dressing is enough.

Just do what suits you – these tasty little caprese salad skewers will be at your party so make them your way.

Make Caprese Skewers Recipe Your Way

  • Use different cheese – if you don’t fancy using mozzarella then try making up these skewers using feta or Manchego cheese.
  • Add some peppers – thread some antipasti peppers onto the skewers. I just use the chargrilled peppers from a jar for speed.
  • Marinate your mozzarella balls – you can marinate the mozzarella in chilli oil, pesto or any of your favourite salad dressings.
  • Add some olives – the Caprese skewers taste delicious with marinated olives threaded onto the sticks alongside the tomatoes.

Can You Make Caprese Skewers Ahead Of Time?

I usually make these up a few hours before the party starts – just arrange them on the platter and wrap with clingfilm and store in the fridge.

Don’t add the dressing until just before you serve.

What Wine Pairs Well With Caprese Salad?

We checked in with our Italian wine expert Elvira over at Independent Wine to get her recommendations on what we should be sipping alongside Caprese Salad.

For a Caprese Salad that isn’t dressed with a Balsamic drizzle she suggests pairing with ArneisTrebbiano or Vermentino.

These wines have elegant flavours that won’t overpower the delicateness of the dish, but will stand up to the acidity of tomatoes. In general, acidic flavours, like vinaigrette and tomato, work especially well with high-acid wines. This is because the acid in the food reduces your perception of the acid in the wine.

It can bring out the fruity, sweet flavours of even the most astringent white.

And if you’re adding the Balsamic drizzle to the Caprese salad making it a bolder dish, she suggests pairing with medium body red wines with sufficient acidity but with low tannins so as not to overpower the dish. And would recommend trying it with cool-climate Alto Adige Pinot Noir or Rosso di Montalcino.
