Cheesy Mashed Potatoes

I know this might not sound like much of a recipe, but trust me, you have to try my cheesy mashed potatoes - they're ridiculously good!

It’s such a quick and easy way to jazz up regular mashed potatoes, and honestly, it goes perfectly with anything from sausages to a cozy beef stew or pork casserole.

When it comes to the cheese, you can use whatever you’ve got—Cheddar, Parmesan, or even a mix of your favourites. However you make it, this cheesy mash will easily be the best mashed potatoes you’ve ever tasted!

  • Total Time - around 35 minutes (mostly hands-off)

In the UK the best type of potato to use for mash are floury potatoes like King Edwards or a good all-rounder like Maris Piper. Or if you like a more smooth, creamy, velvety texture try mashing up the red skinned Desiree.

  • Chopping board
  • Vegetable knife or peeler
  • Saucepan with a lid
  • Masher
  • Measuring jug
  • Cheese grater
  • Cooking spoon

You’ll just need four ingredients to make our delicious cheesy mashed potatoes recipe.

cheesy mash ingredients on a table - peeled potatoes, grated cheese, butter and cream
  • Potatoes – peeled and cut into chunky cubes for boiling
  • Butter – I use unsalted for mashed potatoes
  • Single cream – you can use milk if you prefer.
  • Grated cheese – I usually use a mature Cheddar cheese
  • Boil the potatoes – put the peeled potato chunks into a panful of cold water – I add a pinch of salt to the water.
  • Bring the pan to the boil and then simmer over a low heat for around 20-30 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.
  • Drain the potatoes once cooked.

Cooks Note! If you add potatoes to boiling water, the outside will cook rapidly while the inside will remain hard and undercooked. Instead, always begin cooking potatoes in cold water and bring them to a boil.

  • Mash the potatoes – add the butter to the potatoes and mash using a potato masher until they’re smooth.
  • Add the cream – once the potatoes are smooth, pour in the milk and whip it into the potatoes using a spoon.
  • Add the grated Cheddar cheese – tip the cheese into the panful of mashed potatoes and whip into the hot potato using a spoon.
  • Serve – to serve either transfer to a serving bowl for everyone to help themselves or plate up with your dinner.

I’ve given you the basics for cheesy mashed potatoes, but don’t be afraid to mix it up and make it your own! You can swap out cheeses, add in some garlic or herbs, or even toss in some bacon bits if you’re feeling fancy. Whatever you like, just go for it and create your perfect mash - it’s all about what makes you happy!

  • Make Cheesy Mustard Mash - add a teaspoon of either Dijon or Wholegrain mustard to the mashed potatoes and whip it in to spread the flavour. This is nice with sour cream whipped through too.
  • Make Really Cheesy Mash - add in some sharp Cheddar cheese, Red Leicester, Parmesan cheese and either a blue cheese or some cream cheese to the mashed potatoes. Try this with the flavoured Philadelphia tubs, it is delicious with the garlic and herb cream cheese. And sprinkle over some chopped chives. And if you like a cheese-pull, then go for some mozzarella in the mix too!
  • Add some more veggies - try stirring fried cabbage and onions through the mashed potatoes for a cheesy colcannon style mash. This is one of my favourite side dish!
  • Make potato bake - load that cheesy mashed potato recipe into an oven proof casserole dish, top with more cheese and bake in the oven until golden and bubbling.

Cooks Note! Cheesy mash is great for using as a topping on Cowboy Pie or our Mexican Cottage Pie recipe!
