Our crispy prawns in a delicious golden beer batter served with a garlic mayonnaise dip are just BEYOND GOOD! These crispy prawns are addictive!
In my opinion there just isn’t a tastier way to serve prawns. Not only are they super easy to make but they taste just oh so good.
Great for serving as an appetiser with drinks at summer parties and BBQ’s or throw on some chunky chips and add a side of mushy peas and lemon wedge and eat for dinner.
I always serve these with a quick homemade garlic mayonnaise dip. It works so well.
Crispy Prawns Ingredients
For the beer battered prawns
- 350g raw king prawns – de-veined and shells removed
- 2 tbs cornflour
- 60g plain flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 150ml beer
- vegetable oil for frying in deep fat fryer
For the garlic mayonnaise dip
- 3 tbs mayonnaise
- 1 clove garlic – finely grated
To serve
- Handful of flat leaf parsley – finely chopped
- Lemon wedges
Equipment Need To Make Beer Battered Crispy Prawns
- Deep fat fryer – I use the Tefal Oleoclean fryer because it filters the oil after frying.
- Weighing scales
- Small mixing bowl
- Tablespoon
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring jug
- Teaspoon
- Sharp knife
- Chopping board
- Small bowl
- Serving bowl
- Grater
How To Make Crispy Prawns
- Make the garlic mayonnaise – tip the mayonnaise into a small bowl, add the grated garlic clove and mix well to combine.
- Make the beer batter – add the flour and baking powder to a mixing bowl and slowly whisk in the beer. You are aiming for a consistency of double cream. So feel free to adjust flour/beer quantities until you get the right consistency.
- Heat the fryer to 180C / 350-375F
- Coat the prawns – first toss the prawns in the cornflour, then give them a little shake and dip them into the batter and then straight into the deep fat fryer. Cook for around 4 minutes or until the batter is crispy and golden and the prawns cooked through properly.
Cooks Tip! – Cook the prawns in batches of around 6 so that they cook evenly and are not overcrowded.
- Tip the cooked prawns onto kitchen paper – let the prawns rest on kitchen paper for a few minutes just to soak off any excess oil.
- Serve – tip the prawns into serving bowls, scatter over the chopped parsley and have the lemon wedges with the garlic mayonnaise close by and enjoy every mouthful!

What To Serve With Crispy Prawns
Well, we just LOVE these prawns with the garlic mayonnaise dip but they’re also just delicious with guacamole, salsa and sweet chilli dip.
If I’m making this as a dinner then I add chunky chips, usually done in the fryer (for a treat) and a side of mushy peas, side salad, lemon wedges and a tartar sauce dip.
