Brilliant tips for organising your desk and workspace
Sure, your desk is where you work, where you probably spend a lot of your day, which is why having it well organised and looking good are so important and help to increase productivity.
The best way to organise your desk is to clear it out entirely, move everything off it, have a big declutter, identify what needs to go back into your work space and what best to store it in.
Choose the right work desk
Make sure it’s a great desk, one that accommodates everything you have to do on it. If you need lots of space, then make sure you get a huge desk that gives you what you need. If you only need a small space, then pick a small desk with excellent storage.
Choose the right work chair
Got to be comfortable, got to be nice to look at. Think about whether you need an easily moveable chair with wheels or whether you’re the type who’s happy sat on one of those gym-ball type chairs that’s great at toning your legs.
How to declutter your work space
Evaluate what it is you need to keep and then get rid of clutter, get some proper organisation systems put in place. Look at using trays, magazine files and storage boxes. I like things to look nice, business colours of bland, blue, black and red bore me. I like files with flare and character. Pretty things that make me feel happy.
As for cables, get them out of the way, route them so they can’t be seen. If you can work paperless, then do it. It’s one less thing to tidy away. Make sure you have a rubbish bin close to the desk so that rubbish goes straight into the bin, not squirrelled away into a ‘deal with it later’ pile.
How to organise your desk
Sort your stuff into piles of ‘like with like’ and make sure everything has a home. Set aside your top draw for your stationery items, maybe use draw dividers so each thing has a little section. Make sure everything that you need to hand is to hand, this cut’s down on searching for things and wasting time.
At the end of everyday, make sure you clear off your desk, do the filing, send the mail, put everything back into it’s home. It’s so much easier to start work the next day with a clear well ordered desk.
How to make your work space inspiring
Invest in nice notebooks, nice pens, things with a little quirkiness or style. I find it much easier to be creative and productive when I’ve got nice stationery. Fickle it may be but it works for me.
Add one or two personal items to the desk, a nice photograph that makes you smile, a vase of pretty flowers. Work space should feel good.
