Easy Asparagus Tart Recipe

Super simple recipe for an easy asparagus tart – no fuss, no faff, just delicious puff pastry tart topped with fine asparagus and tangy mature cheddar cheese.

I don’t think there’s a more perfect way to serve asparagus than in a simple tart. It makes a really nice spring lunch idea. And it’s just so pretty once it’s cooked.

We simply take a puff pastry sheet, top it with a delicious herby base sauce made using creme fraiche, then lay on the asparagus and sprinkle over tangy cheddar cheese. It’s so simple, a great vegetarian recipe.

Asparagus Tart Ingredients

Everything you’ll need to make a GORGEOUS asparagus puff pastry tart!

  • 320g Jus-Rol Puff Pastry Sheet
  • Small bunch of chives – chopped
  • 150g fine asparagus – sliced in half lengthways
  • 100g Cheddar cheese – grated
  • 1 egg – beaten
  • Salt and Black pepper – to taste

  • Greaseproof paper
  • Baking tray
  • Sharp vegetable knife
  • Chopping board
  • Small bowl x 2
  • Dessertspoon
  • Grater
  • Pastry brush

How To Make Asparagus Tart

Cooks tip! Remember to take the puff pastry sheet out of the fridge around 20-30 minutes before you want to use it.

  • Preheat the oven – to 180C / 350 F / Gas Mark 4
  • Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper
  • Lay the puff pastry onto the baking tray – take a sharp knife and score a border into the pastry around 1.5cm from the edge of the pastry. This will ensure the edges puff up around the filling.
  • Mix the creme fraiche base sauce – tip the creme fraiche into a small bowl, add the chopped chives and season with salt and cracked black pepper to taste. Spread this in an even layer over the centre of the puff pastry sheet.
  • Scatter over the grated cheese – just scatter it evenly over the creme friache layer.
  • Lay the asparagus onto the puff pastry – line the asparagus up on the cheesy creme fraiche base sauce.
  • Brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg

  • Bake in the oven – for around 30 minutes or until the pastry is cooked, puffed and golden and the asparagus cooked through.
  • Once cooked – slide the asparagus and cheese tart onto a cooling rack and leave for 5-10 minutes to cool. Then slice and serve.

What To Eat With Asparagus And Cheese Tart

This tasty spring tart recipe goes really well with any salad dishes or lightly steamed vegetables. When serving as an  easy lunch recipe any of the following work well...

  • Serve the asparagus tart with boiled new potatoes and purple sprouting broccoli for a delicious spring meal idea.
  • Add a tomato salad – a simple salad of sliced tomatoes, drizzled with Balsamic vinegar and olive oil seasoned with sea salt and cracked black pepper is a great side dish to serve with a tart.
  • Try and light side dish of healthy coleslaw (ad feature recipe) – fresh crunchy purple cabbage and carrots tossed in a vinaigrette dressing.
  • If there’s any leftover tart – it’ll keep in the fridge for a day and is delicious cold as a snack idea.

  • small bunch chives - chopped 
  • 150g fine asparagus 
  • 100g Cheddar cheese
