  • Chopping board
  • Sharp knife
  • Tablespoon
  • Frying pan (or grill, griddle pan, BBQ or air fryer - depending on how you want to cook the halloumi)

Different Ways To Cook Halloumi

You can cook halloumi in several different ways - just choose your favourite from the cooking methods below

How to pan fry halloumi

Okay, now this is our absolute favourite way to cook halloumi. You get great caramelisation on the outside and crispy edges. Simply add a splash of olive oil to a frying pan over a high heat. Add the halloumi slices and cook for around 4-5 minutes, flipping half way through cooking.

If you prefer you can cook the halloumi without any additional oil. Just use a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat, and sizzle the halloumi on both sides for a couple of minutes. This way is great, but not quite as flavoursome as frying in olive oil.

How to cook halloumi in a griddle pan

Griddle pans give that lovely charred stripe to foods as you cook them. Just brush the halloumi slices with olive oil, then sear on the griddle pan for around 2-3 minutes a side over a high heat. This method is perfect for a halloumi burger.

How to BBQ halloumi to make an halloumi burger

Now, I wouldn't say that its worth putting the BBQ on just to make this recipe, but if you're already doing some BBQ cooking then using the BBQ for the halloumi burgers is a good thing!

Once the BBQ is up to around 200C cooking temperature I spritz the BBQ grill using Weber Non-Stick Oil Spray then lay on the halloumi slices. Quick note, if you're BBQ'ing halloumi, cut the slices a little thicker or they tend to disappear between the grills.

Cook the halloumi slices for around 2-3 minutes a side, flipping with BBQ tongs half way through cooking.

How to air fry halloumi

Air fryer halloumi is easy but does take a little longer. It's the best method if you're cooking four or more halloumi burgers at once. Just brush the halloumi with a little olive oil then lay in a single layer in the air fryer basket.

Cook at 180C for around 8-10 minutes, flipping half way through cooking.

ingredients for halloumi burgers on a white table top - include slices of halloumi, brioche burger rolls, red pepper hummus, bowl of rocket leaves and bottle of ketchup
  • Halloumi - halloumi cheese is a Cypriot semi-hard cheese, made from cow, sheep or goat milk, sometimes a mixture. It's brilliant for slicing and using in cooking.
  • Brioche burger rolls - choose any rolls you like, but the brioche rolls with sesame seeds go really well with halloumi.
  • Red pepper hummus - creamy red pepper hummus is the perfect match for salty halloumi - you can switch this for any hummus you like though. And on days we've been all organised, we like to use our homemade beetroot hummus for this recipe!
  • Rocket - the pepperiness of fresh rocket leaves is a great combo with salty cheese and creamy hummus. You can swap this for shredded lettuce if you prefer.
  • Ketchup - we like these with ketchup, but you can swap this for burger relish, salsa or chilli jam, they all work really well.
  • 2 teaspoon olive oil - this is optional, if you want to fry the halloumi in oil.

Tips for Making the Perfect Halloumi Burger

Our top four tips for making the perfect halloumi burger:

  1. Buy good halloumi: If you're making halloumi the star of the recipe, it's worth spending a little more on good quality cheese. The cheaper varieties tend to not hold together as well when you cook them.
  2. Get the cooking method right: Halloumi can be cooked in various ways, such as pan-frying, grilling, BBQing, or air frying. Experiment and find your preferred method, but keep in mind that pan-frying tends to give the best results, with crispy edges and caramelised surface.
  3. Don't overcook the halloumi: Halloumi is best enjoyed when it has a slightly crispy exterior and a soft, gooey center. Be careful not to overcook it, as it can become quite tough and chewy. Cook it just until it's golden brown on the outside and still slightly squidgy and melted on the inside.
  4. Pair it with your favourite flavours: Halloumi burgers are robust and really stand up to adding some extra flavours. Be sure to choose your favourite toppings and the things that make you happy when you eat!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does halloumi taste like?

Halloumi has a salty, mild, tangy almost feta taste like taste (although not as strong as feta)

Is halloumi healthier than normal cheese?

It tends to be lower fat than normal hard fat cheese like traditional Cheddar. But it does contain a lit more salt. Check out the health benefits of halloumi here.

Can vegetarians eat halloumi?

Most halloumi is suitable for vegetarians, although it would be wise to always check the packet as some halloumi is made with animal-derived rennet.

Can you eat halloumi raw?

You can eat halloumi uncooked, and it's nice grated into salad almost as a seasoning as it's quite salty. Although, I would always recommend cooking halloumi, because if you don't you're missing out on a total treat. Squidgy melty middles, crispy deliciously caramelised edges, it's just so good!

Yes, just swap out the brioche buns for a gluten free variety, and double check the other ingredients you use are free from gluten.
