Herb and butter rice is one of those delicious, easy side dishes that goes with just about anything! Because it’s so versatile, you can mix and match the herbs to suit whatever you’re serving up for dinner. And best of all, it’s so easy to make!

Serves – 4 

Prep Time – 2 minutes 

Cook Time – approx 10 minutes (depending on the type of rice you use)

Total Time – approx 15 minutes

Ingredients For Herb And Butter Rice

You just need four ingredients to make this easy rice side dish

  • 1 cup basmati rice 
  • 40g butter
  • 1 tsp herbs de Provence (see below for more herb and spice combos)
  • Pinch of salt

How To Make Herb And Butter Rice

This tasty rice dish is so easy it’s absolutely one of our go-to sides! Especially in autumn as it goes so well with casseroles and creamy pan-fried chicken.

Step One – cook the rice

  • Cook the rice as per the packet instructions, then drain using the colander and then return the rice to the hot pan.

Step Two – add the butter and herbs

  • Simply add the butter and the herbs to the pan with the rice. Then stir them gently through the hot rice – try doing this with a fork as it fluffs the rice up better.

Step Three – serve – serve the rice alongside dinner

  • We usually tip the rice into a serving dish and then everyone can just help themselves to dinner.

Recipe Tips And Ingredient Variations

Make Italian style herb and butter rice

Add the butter, a splash of olive oil, stir in some dried oregano, fresh chopped thyme, fresh flat leaf parsley and if I’m serving with a rich dish, I add in some nice chopped fresh rosemary for a woody, warming flavour.

Make Greek style herby rice

Stir the butter through the rice with some freshly chopped mint, oregano and lemon zest. Sometime I also stir through a little crumbled feta with this version too – it goes so well with chicken kebabs or grilled salmon.

Indian spiced herb and butter rice

Simply stir through some butter, a pinch of ground cumin, pinch of ground turmeric, some freshly chopped coriander and a scattering of mint leaves.

Use different rice

You can make this herb and butter rice dish with any rice you like. Wild rice, short grain, long grain, brown rice or basmati. And when I’m short on time I use the microwave sachets which cook in just two minutes.
