Equipment Needed

  • Air fryer – we use a  Ninja Foodi Max Dual Zone Air Fryer – the 9.5 litre two drawer cooking space is BRILLIANT when you’re cooking for a family. And it makes cooking meat, chicken or fish and potatoes at the same time super easy!
  • Food thermometer – I totally recommend getting yourself a food thermometer, especially for air frying, it really gives me peace of mind when cooking. I like to know that food is cooked to the right temperature.

How To Make Easy Meatballs Subs

You’ll just LOVE how easy these meatball subs are to air fry!

Step One cook the meatballs

  • Cook the meatballs – using your preferred method – air fry, bake or fry. We air fry them on 400F/200C for around 12-15 minutes (or until cooked through properly – check with the food thermometer that they’re heated to the centres)

Step Two – make up the meatball subs

  • Split open the sub rolls, add a tablespoon of marinara sauce, lay on the cooked meatballs, add more marinara sauce on top.
  • Then scatter over the grated cheese.

Step Three – air fry the meatball subs

  • We cook our meatball subs in the air fryer – just lay the subs on a sheet of aluminum foil and air fry on 400F/200C for around 5 minutes or until the marinara sauce is heated through and the cheesy melted.
  • If you don’t want to air fry you could melt under the broiler/grill until the cheese is melted and bubbling and the marinara sauce heated through properly.
  • Add some fresh herbs like basil or flat leaf parsley and serve.

What Kind Of Sauce Should You Use For Meatball Subs

Well, there’s no real rule when it comes to choosing a sauce. Some people like to keep in classic with a nice marinara. Or you can mix things up and just choose any sauce you like. We like the Mutti pasta sauces anything with a kick of chilli heat and lots of garlic is good for us.

But you could choose a chunky vegetable version, sun dried tomato or even a pesto! This is your meatball sandwich, you make it to suit you.
