Pear Crumble Ingredients

You'll only need a handful of wholesome ingredients to make this delicious pear crumble recipe

ingredients for pear crumble on a white table top - include 5 pears, bowl of flour, bowl of soft brown sugar, bowl of ground almonds, block of butter and a small bowl of dark brown sugar

For the pear crumble filling

  • Pears - we usually use Conference Pears, but you can just use any you have to hand, there's no rules. You need them to be just ripening, but not overly squishy. You can make this with Anjou pears or Bartlett pears if you prefer.
  • Dark brown sugar - this is mixed into the pear chunks and gives them a love, rich sweetness as they cook.
  • Spices - you can add a pinch of cinnamon or pinch go ground nutmeg to your pear mixture if you like.

For the pear crumble topping

  • Plain flour
  • Unsalted butter - at room temperature so it's easy to rub into the flour.
  • Soft brown sugar - you can use caster sugar or dark brown sugar if you prefer.
  • Ground almonds - this just adds a delicious flavour to the crumb topping. You can swap this for rolled oats if you prefer.

How To Make Pear Crumble

Crumble is one of the easiest desserts to make, it's rustic, yummy and absolutely no need to be neat! (our favourite kind of cooking!)

Step One - preheat the oven

Step Two - make the pear filling

  • Peel the pears and remove the core. Then chop into bitesized pieces and slices and toss them into the ovenproof baking dish or pie dish.
  • Sprinkle the brown sugar over the chopped pears and stir it into the fruit so that the pears turn a lovely brown colour.

Step Three - make the crumble topping

  • Tip the flour and butter into a large mixing bowl. Rub the butter into the flour using your fingers until it resembles a fine breadcrumb like mixture.
  • Then tip in the light brown sugar and ground almonds and stir them into the crumble topping mixture.

Step Four - put together the pear crumble

  • Scatter the crumble topping over the chopped pears in the ovenproof dish, don't pack it down, let it sit loosely.

Step Five - bake the pear crumble

  • Bake the crumble in the hot oven for around 25-30 minutes or until the pears have softened and the crumble is turning golden brown on top.

Step Six - serve

  • Let the crumble cool a little and then serve with either hot or cold custard, clotted cream, double cream or vanilla ice cream.
