Easy Shredded Ham Recipe

Sharing is caring!

Really easy shredded ham recipe with a mouthwateringly good sweet and smoky taste – perfect for using in sandwiches, pasta or salads and oh so simple to make!

Like lots of you lately I’ve had to find new places to buy food and it’s actually been a good thing because I’ve stumbled across a great local butcher who delivers meat boxes.

So the way I cook has changed and now I don’t really plan, I just use what comes so it’s meant being more inventive with ingredients, less wasteful and that can only be a good thing!

One of the ingredients in this weeks butchers box delivery was some really thick and meaty gammon steaks.

But rather than just do the traditional gammon, pineapple, egg and chips I wanted to cook it so I could make it stretch further.

So I turned to the slow cooker and made three of those butchers gammon steaks into just the BEST shredded ham with the most amazing sweet and smoky flavour, honestly, mouthwateringly good!

How to make shredded ham

It’s super simple to make shredded ham using the slow cooker – just a case of throwing in the gammon steaks, adding your chosen liquid and leaving the slow cooker to do it’s thing.

If you want your shredded ham to have a great sweet and smoky flavour then follow the recipe below.

Easy Shredded Ham Ingredients

Our recipe is super easy and uses extra ingredients you’ll probably have at home in the cupboard/fridge.

  • 3 Thick Cut Butchers Gammon Steaks (probably around 1kg in weight)
  • 1 Large Onion
  • 150ml Apple Juice (you can use apple cider or just water if you prefer)
  • 2 tsp Smoked Paprika

  • Heat the slow cooker to low and lightly grease the inside of the slow cooker pan so the food doesn’t stick.
  • Peel and slice the onion into 3 thick wedges that the gammon steaks can sit on whilst they cook.

  • Pour over the apple juice – you can use apple cider if you prefer or just plain water although you won’t get the same sweetness.

  • Make sure the gammon steaks are not completely under the liquid – you want them to just be to be only just in the apple juice.

  • Cook in the slow cooker on slow for around 6-8 hours. Check the internal temperature of the meat using a meat thermometer. You can get the safe cooked meat temperature guide here. I like to cook gammon until the internal temperature is at least 75 degrees.

  • Remove the cooked gammon steaks from the slow cooker and pull the ham apart using two forks – it will come apart really easily to create delicious shredded ham.

  • Once the ham is shredded I let it cool at room temperature for around an hour and then store in the fridge.

How long does pulled ham last in the fridge?

Shredded ham usually keeps in the fridge for up to 3 days. However to keep safe I always ensure the following….

  • That I cool and store the ham away in the fridge quickly after cooking (within an hour of being cooked)
  • That the temperature of my fridge is below 5C degrees
  • I make sure the ham is well wrapped in foil to stop it drying out.
  • I always make sure the ham is consumed before the use-by date stated on the pack.

Food safety is always your responsibility – for more in-depth food storage information check out the Food Standards Agency guide here.
