Five delicious flavour twists on Shepherd’s Pie – turn a classic family dinner recipe into something really special.
Our comforting, warming shepherd’s pie really is hard to beat… sat on a plate, nestled up to some pickled red cabbage, alongside a cheeky slice of buttery crusty bread.
But… just in case you’re getting bored of the same old thing, week in, week out then we’ve got five delicious twists on shepherd’s pie your family are just going to love.
Five Twists on Shepherd’s Pie
Italian shepherd’s pie
Mix up a meaty bolognese sauce using either beef or lamb mince, make sure there’s plenty of Italian herbs like oregano, basil and thyme in there flavouring up the meat. Then top it with fluffy mashed potato scattered with Parmesan cheese. Absolutely delish!
Sausage & bean shepherd’s pie
Super quick and super easy. Add a layer of baked beans to the bottom of your pie dish, you could opt for BBQ beans if you wanted a smoky flavour. Add some freshly cooked sausages to the bean mixture, I tend to use chipolatas for this. Then top with mashed potatoes, forked so they crisp up and add a handful of grated cheddar cheese for a nice melty finish.
Mexican Shepherd’s Pie
Let’s go all Mexican with our amazingly tasty mash up of beef chilli loaded with extra veggies like sweet potatoes and black beans then topped with fluffy mashed potatoes scattered with grated mature cheddar and finished off in the oven. The kids will ask for this again and again. Get the Mexican shepherds pie recipe here.
Vegetarian shepherd’s pie
Make up a quick vegetarian filling – we use tinned tomatoes mixed with tinned green lentils and stir in some garlic and sautéed onion. Top with a fluffy mash made from a tasty combo of potatoes and sweet potatoes and top with a handful of grated cheese. Yum. Of course you can make this into Vegan Shepherd’s Pie and skip the cheese or use a dairy free alternative.
Spicy curried shepherd’s pie
A big favourite here – stick with the original shepherd’s pie recipe and add a couple of spoonfuls of curry paste to the lamb mince – go spicy or mild whichever you prefer. Make the fluffy topping using potatoes, sweet potatoes and swede mashed together, with a sprinkling of turmeric and chilli flakes.
What side dishes go with Shepherd’s Pie?
Well… the best side dishes for Shepherd’s Pie are definitely green vegetables – try peas, sautéed cabbage, steamed broccoli or green beans.
