Although thought of as a quintessentially British drink, the origins of gin actually go back centuries to Holland, and a Dutch style spirit know as Genever.
Genever is a malt wine based spirit distilled from rich grains (similar to a whisky) and then flavoured with juniper and other herbs and spices.
So is very different from the gin we know today, which is a neutral spirit base, flavoured up with all sorts of different fruits and botanicals.
Gin, in its modern form, underwent a meteoric rise in popularity throughout the 18th century.
It had a significantly less robust flavour than Genever, which made it more suited for the taste preferences of the British at that time.
Much of the continued popularity of gin can be sourced back to the rise of the classic gin and tonic.
Which was a drink believed to have been created by the British troops in India as a way of making quinine with it's anti-malarial properties more palatable!
Adding gin and sugar syrup to the quinine made it a whole lot nicer to take! And so gave rise to the G&T we know and love today!
However, you don't need to just stick to a Gin And Tonic! There are many different types of gin cocktails that you can try out and experiment with.
Some of the most popular ones include a Gin Fizz, Gin Martini, French 75 or the perfect English Garden Cocktail.

How To Make A Perfect Gin And Tonic
When it comes to the perfect serve for a G&T, you'll not go far wrong with our drinks tips!
The perfect gin and tonic is a drink that every foodie should know how to make. It is not just about the alcohol, it’s about the balance of flavours that you get with this drink.
And of course, it can be made in different ways depending on your taste.
There are two main ways to make a gin and tonic: the traditional way or with a twist. The traditional way is to add ice cubes, gin, tonic water and a slice of lemon.
The twist is to add fresh thyme leaves, which will give the drink an earthy flavour. Or try other herbs you like.
We make these with rosemary and basil which add a really fragrant lift to a G&T and pair well with a nice Mediterranean tonic water and slice of lemon.
