Best Gluten Free Cheese Scone Recipe
It’s a really simple flavoursome family recipe and so easy to make, I sometimes bake these for breakfast as they really don’t take long to make.
And cheese scones just go so perfectly with a cup of coffee.
They taste best still warm from the oven, smothered with butter so it melts into them.
If you’re eating them for lunch then they’re lovely with nice cheese and a tangy chutney or dipped into a bowl of warming soup.
Ingredients for Gluten Free Cheese Scones

- 200g Gluten Free Plain Flour (I use Doves Farm)
- 2 tsp Baking Powder (choose a gluten free variety)
- Pinch Salt
- Pinch Black Pepper
- 1/2tsp – 1 tsp of Mustard Powder (depending on how mustard-y you like them)
- 50g Butter (at room temperature)
- 100g Grated Cheddar Cheese
- 100ml Milk (plus a little extra for brushing the tops of the scones before baking)

How to Make Gluten Free Cheese Scones

- Preheat the oven to 200C
- Lightly grease a baking tray with butter
- Tip the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper and mustard powder into a mixing bowl and mix together.

- Tip the butter into the flour mixture.

- Rub the butter into the flour with your finger tips until the texture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

- Tip the grated Cheddar cheese into the scone mixture.

- Stir the grated Cheddar cheese through the scone mixture using a knife – this just stops the mixture clumping together and gets a good even spread of cheese.

- Pour the milk into the centre of the scone mixture.

- Stir the scone mixture with a knife and bring it all together.

- Continue to stir the mixture briskly until you start to get a stiff dough.

- Use your hands to bring the scone dough together into a ball.

- Tip the dough onto a floured plate or board and cut it into eight equal pieces.

- Shape each little pile of dough into a scone shape using your hand and the edge of a knife.

- Place the scones onto the greased baking tray – well spaced as they will rise a little when baking.

- Brush the tops of the scone lightly with a little drop of milk.

- Bake the scones in the oven for around 10-15 minutes until turning golden brown on top.

- Place the scone on a wire rack to cool slightly before eating.
