I hold my hands up… I HATE WORKING OUT – I hate the gym, I hate exercise classes, the thought of lycra clad activity turns me cold! BUT I still want to be healthy…. here’s how to throw some fitness activities into your day, without hitting the gym.
How to get fit when you hate working out!
Okay the easiest way to squeeze a little fitness into your day is to break it down into manageable chunks of time – like 10 minutes a pop, that way it’s not too hard, you won’t get bored and it’s totally achievable.
It’s also best to build it into your day – even if you just do 3 lots of 10 minutes of activity, it all adds up and it’s all great for boosting your mood and your fitness.
Add some walking into your day – whether you get off the bus a couple of stops early, park the car further away from where you’re going. Throw on some trainers and nip out during your lunch break and walk for 20 minutes. And, if you do it daily, all those steps will add up to a good few miles a week.
Squeeze even more walking into your day and take the stairs whenever you can – again, every little bit adds up.
Get the music up loud and dance like nobody is watching (even if they are). Music and dancing is not only great for your fitness, it burns a whole load of calories and it really boosts your mood. Totally feel good – even if you just squeeze in 15 minutes dancing whilst you cook dinner – it adds up! Check out the calorie counter over on Fitness Blender to work out how many calories you can burn with different types of dancing.
Stay with me on this one… BUT cleaning up actually busts loads of calories! So you get the benefit of a nice clean house and burning off some cake… or cheese… or wine….

Hula hooping is a brilliant way to burn off calories and tone your abdominal muscles to boot! You could be burning up to 7 calories a minute! Grab the weighted hula hoop workout over on Livestrong here.
Get busy between the sheets… or wherever does it for you really and burn off some calories having a good time. Find out just how many calories sex burns over on Women’s Day here.
Improve your diet…
I’m not big on dieting – I’m more a believer in a little of what you fancy and all that. But there are simple ways to improve your fitness just by being more careful over what you eat (and drink) simple changes can over time add up to a big difference.
- Drink water instead of sugary drinks
- Cut down on alcohol and have a couple of alcohol free nights a week
- Try to eat 5-7 portions of fruit or veg a day
- Swap white carbs for wholegrain varieties
- Don’t overdo the treats and junk food
How to stick to getting fit!
I always find it’s easier to make just one change at a time and run with it for a week or so before adding in another – if you change everything in one go – things feel hard work, it feels a chore and you’re less likely to stick to it long term.
