Back to school is a busy time for kids! Settling into new routines, early mornings, long days and getting back in the mix with all their friends. I like to put a bit of thought and effort into health and wellness to help them along and help prevent issues from arising.
As a mum of three kids I know the ‘back to school thing’ needs tackling from a health and wellness perspective and these are the areas I tend to focus on.
Getting the kids back into a good sleep routine after the freedom of late nights and lazy lie-ins enjoyed all summer is essential! Tired grumpy kids are miserable, they don’t focus well at school and generally feel rubbish!
Earlier nights mean you’ll get your evenings back to yourself too – so it’s a win-win! Grab some fab sleep tips over at Raising Badgers that’ll help even the most reluctant of sleepers in to bed! And if you need some tips for getting a better nights sleep yourself – we’ve some great sleep tips here.
Boosting the Immune System
School is just a big jumble of bugs and illnesses! I always like to give the kids a boost throughout the autumn and winter when bugs are more prevalent. I tend to use Sambucol vitamin medicines, especially if they’ve come down with a cold – I think it helps to shorten the length of the illness.
I also try to ensure they eat a varied diet and get their 5-a-day. A good diet is key to keeping kids fit and healthy!
Dealing with stress and anxiety
Going back to school can be a worrying time for small children or if you’ve got older kids, exams and mountains of homework can really pile on the stress. I do try to help the kids out – for my youngest this can be just dealing with little niggling worries – some of the ideas in this thinking, feelings and talking station can be adapted for home.
However when my teenage children have been particularly stressed about exams or just the amount of work they’ve had piled on to them then Bach remedies are always my go-to choice as they’re a natural, gentle remedy that’s always worked for us. The Rescue Pastilles are nice tasting and great for kids.
It’s also worth trying out a little mindfulness, if you can get your kids to relax and wind down enough to take part it’s a great and has loads of health benefits too.
Other Back to School – Health Essentials!
Back to school is always a hectic time so it makes sense to me to stock up on a few health essentials
I tend to stock up on head lice treatment, multi vitamins, antiseptic cream and plasters (usually needed for shoes that rub…)
