Hot Dog Pasta

For a super easy meal idea cook up our one-pan hot dog pasta – flavourful smoky tomato sauce and packed with veggies. Always a big hit with the kids!

I know, hot dogs and pasta are two foods that are typically served separately, but combined in this dish, they make for a filling meal that is not only delicious, but surprisingly easy to make!

And… everyone loves a one-pot pasta meal don’t they? Less faff, less washing up and more time to do all of the other things!

This is a great recipe for fuelling the kids up with during the school holidays when they always seem to be extra hungry! Plus if the kids are BORED, they could help make this easy hot dog pasta recipe too!

Equipment Needed

  • Chopping board
  • Knife
  • Large saucepan with lid
  • Tablespoon
  • Teaspoon
  • Cooking spoon or spatula
  • Weighing scales – to weigh the pasta or just make a good guess
  • Measuring jug

Hot Dog Pasta Ingredients

You’ll just need a handful of ingredients to make this easy hotdog pasta dish. Plus, we’ve given you swaps too so that you can mix things up a little to use what you have in.

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion – diced – use any onion you have, red, brown or even a bunch of spring onions
  • 1 pepper – diced – again use whichever colour you like red, yellow, orange or green bell peppers are all fine in this recipe. You can even use the chargrilled jarred ones, drained and sliced
  • 1 clove garlic – finely chopped – you could use 1/2 tsp of jarred garlic or garlic powder
  • 6 small hot dog sausages – use any hotdogs you like – frankfurters, chicken dogs or even vegetarian hot dogs. And you can use tinned hot dogs or hot dogs in a jar.
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika – this gives the hot dog pasta a really smoky delicious taste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp taco seasoning – this just adds a spicy kick, you can swap for chilli powder or leave out altogether.
  • 400g can of tomatoes
  • 750ml vegetable stock
  • Pinch salt and black pepper

How To Make Hot Dog Pasta

Oh, you’re just going to love how easy this one-pot hot dog tomato pasta recipe is to make!

Step One – sauté the onions and peppers

  • Add the olive oil to a large saucepan and gently fry the onions, peppers and chopped garlic for 5 minutes until they’re starting to soften.

  • After 5 minutes cooking tip in the smoked paprika, dried oregano and taco seasoning and mix it into the fried vegetables.

Step Two – add the rest of the hot dog pasta recipe ingredients

  • Add in the sliced hotdogs, tinned tomatoes and dried pasta.

  • Then pour in the hot vegetable stock and season with salt and black pepper.
  • Give everything a gentle mix together.

Step Three – cook the hot dog pasta sauce

  • Put the lid onto the saucepan and bring the sauce to the boil.
  • Then reduce the heat and simmer with the lid on for around 15-20 minutes or until the pasta is cooked through, the sauce reduced and the hotdogs piping hot throughout.
  • Remember to give the pan a stir every 3-4 minutes to avoid anything sticking.

Step Four – serve up your yummy pasta and hotdogs

  • Divide the delicious hot dogs and pasta between the bowls and tuck in! I find kids like this even more with a good sprinkling of grated cheese on top.

How To Bulk Up The Hot Dog Pasta To Feed More People

Okay, we get it, sometimes the meal needs to stretch that bit further – try any of the following ways to bulk up the meal easily!

Add more vegetables to your frankfurter pasta recipe

  • Try adding in sweetcorn, canned beans (yes, even a tin of baked beans!) throw in some mushrooms, or tinned potatoes or tinned baby carrots.

Turn it into a hot dog pasta bake and add sides

  • Add another can of tomatoes – tip the hot dog pasta into a roasting tin or casserole dish, top with grated cheese and serve with a side of garlic bread, the garlic baguettes from the super market are great with this dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
