How To Wash A Shower Curtain

The best way to wash fabric shower curtain in the washing machine

  • Take the shower curtain down from the hooks.
  • Check the washing label for advice on what temperature and cycle to wash the shower curtain on.
  • Put the shower curtain into the washing machine and select the hottest cycle recommended on the washing label.
  • Choose a biological washing detergent, this will help wash any grease, bodily fluids or mildew build up.
  • For extra hygiene you could add some laundry sanitiser – I do this every time I wash shower curtains as I think it helps to prevent mildew growth.
  • Once the shower curtain has been washed, remove it from the washing machine and re-hang on the curtain hooks. Pull the curtain out fully so that it can air dry. It’s a good idea to open the bathroom window too so that the room is well ventilated.

How To Clean Plastic Shower Curtains

The best way to clean plastic and vinyl shower curtains in the washing machine

  • Take the shower curtain down from the hooks.
  • Check the washing label for advice on what temperature and cycle to wash the shower curtain on.
  • Put the shower curtain into the washing machine and select the washing cycle – we recommend washing plastic and vinyl shower curtains on a cool cycle.
  • Add a couple of bath towels to the washing machine too. This helps the curtain to clean better as it agitates more effectively in the washing machine.
  • Choose a biological washing detergent, this will help wash any grease, bodily fluids or mildew build up.
  • It’s also a good idea to add some colour safe bleach to the wash cycle (follow instructions on the package). The colour safe bleach will help with mould and mildew removal.
  • Once the shower curtain has been washed, remove it from the washing machine and re-hang on the curtain hooks. Pull the curtain out fully so that it can air dry. Again it’s a good idea to open the bathroom window too so that the room is well ventilated and the curtain will dry faster.

How to Clean Shower Curtain Rings

Whilst your shower curtain is washing it’s a great time to wash the shower curtain rings and give the shower curtain rail a wipe down.

To wash the shower curtain rings just fill the bathroom sink with hot soapy water and leave them to soak for around 20 minutes then wipe clean with a micro fibre cleaning cloth, rinse in clean warm water and leave to air dry on a towel.
