Everyone loves the bright white glow of new trainers! Here’s how to clean white trainers properly so they stay fresh, clean and bright white!

It’s actually really easy to clean and maintain your white trainers. So that they stay looking bright, white and great paired with your favourite outfits.

As with all cleaning chores, is best to keep on top of things from the start, that way you can pretty much avoid having to tackle any heavy cleaning!

Obviously it’s best to deal with dirt and stains as they happen, it just makes them easier to clean and less likely to cause permanent marks on your trainers.

Simple to follow instructions for cleaning white canvas or white leather trainers – including how to clean laces and soles.

How To Clean White Laces

  • Remove the laces from the white trainers.
  • If they’re only a little bit dirty – then put them to soak in some warm water with biological washing powder dissolved into it. You can also tie laces together and wash them in the washing machine with the whites loads if you prefer.
  • Once the laces are clean – rinse them well in clean water and hang them to dry.

Equipment Needed To Clean White Canvas Trainers

  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Dishwashing soap
  • Microfibre cloth
  • Toothbrush
  • Washing powder (if stained)
  • Newspaper or kitchen roll
  • Bleach

How To Clean White Canvas Trainers

  • Firstly use a clean stiff brush to brush away any loose dirt or mud particles from both the tops of the trainers and the soles.
  • Apply the dishwashing soap to a damp microfibre cloth or toothbrush and rub the trainers in small circular motions – to avoid damage, don’t scrub, rub or press too hard!
  • Once cleaned, gently rub over with a clean microfibre cloth dipped in fresh, clean warm water to remove any soap suds from the trainers.

How To Remove Stains From White Canvas Trainers

  • Use a damp cloth or toothbrush dipped in a little biological washing powder. Then apply gently to stained areas. Rub gently or scrub gently in a circular motion all across the stained area.
  • Leave the washing powder to sit on the stain for around 5 minutes and then remove using a clean cloth dipped in fresh, clean warm water.
  • Repeat this process as necessary depending on how bad the staining is.

  • Simply scrub the soles with a toothbrush and washing up liquid, then rinse well.

How to Air Dry Cleaned White Trainers

As tempting as it may be to put the trainers on top of the radiator to dry them, don’t! The direct heat will damage the trainers.

Instead, air dry the trainers properly before use. Do this by stuffing the shoe with either newspaper or kitchen roll, which will absorb any moisture. And then leave them to dry at room temperature.

If it’s a nice windy day, try hanging them from the washing line outdoors to dry more quickly.

How To Clean White Leather Trainers

To clean white leather trainers just follow all the instructions above.

However you can use a very dilute bleach solution – as in 1 part bleach and 6 parts water to remove any particularly stubborn stains. But be sure to rinse it from the trainers well.

When it comes to leather trainers it’s also a great ideas to use a leather balm after cleaning, to nourish the leather and to help avoid the leather cracking.

Can I Wash Trainers In The Washing Machine?

NO! I know it seems super easy to throw trainers into the washing machine, but you risk damaging your trainers and your washing machine!
