It’s the perfect way to finish a your totally delicious puddings or pie, it adds an extra tasty crunch to the crumble.
You can also use this oatmeal crumble topping on top of muffins or to add a crumb topping to apple pie.
And adding oats increases the fibre content and of course oats are packed with vitamins and minerals so they’re a great addition to any recipe!
Crumble Topping With Oats Recipe
Serves – 6 people
Prep Time – 10 mins
Cooking Time – when used on a fruit crumble, this will cook through with the fruit in around 30-40 minutes.
Total Time – around 50 minutes (but only 10 minutes hands-on work)

Ingredients For Making Crumble Topping With Oats
You’ll just need a handful of basic baking ingredients to make a batch of oat crumble topping
- 180g plain flour (all purpose flour)
- 100g unsalted butter – at room temperature
- 50g steel cut oats (rolled oats not quick oats)
- 50g caster sugar – you can swap this for brown sugar if you prefer a crunchier crumble topping.
Optional Spices – you can add a touch of warming scented spice and extra flavor to your crumble topping, try adding a teaspoon ground cinnamon or a pinch of nutmeg.

How To Make Crumble Topping With Oats
Our quick crumble topping is super easy to make and will only take a few minutes
Step One – mix the butter and flour
- Add the butter to the flour in a mixing bowl. (if you’re adding a teaspoon cinnamon, do this at this stage)
- Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips until the crumble mix resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Step Two – mix in the sugar and oats
- Next tip in the oats and sugar and stir them through the crumble mixture.
Cooks Note! If I’m making this simple crumble topping for an apple crumble then I always add a tsp of ground cinnamon to the flour too for extra deliciousness!

How Long Does Crumble Topping Keep In The Fridge?
You can store the quick crumble topping with oats in an air tight container or freezer bag for up to 24 hours in the fridge.
Can I Freeze Crumble Topping?
Yes – just put the simple crumble topping into an air tight container or freezer bag and pop in the freezer for up to 3 months.
To use the crumble topping just take it out of the freezer and defrost in the fridge overnight – then add to your crumble and bake as usual.
Cooks Tip! Double or triple the quantities and keep in the freezer for using over the next few weeks.
How To Make Gluten Free Oat Crumble Topping
Fruit crumble is one of those desserts that converts to gluten-free deliciously. I often make a mini gluten free crumble for my gluten-free child, Just alongside the regular one. Just be sure to use gluten free ingredients. And for the gluten free flour I tend to use Doves Farm plain flour for this recipe.

You can make a crunchy crumble topping by adding in some nuts. Crumble topping with nuts is super tasty – you can try adding in flaked almonds, walnut pieces, or crunched up hazelnuts. Crunchy crumble topping recipe with nuts is especially nice on autumn apple crumble.
