Casserole Mix Recipe

You’ll have seen those little sachets of casserole mix in the supermarkets – the ones you just add to water.

Well you can actually make your own version at home and it’s really easy!

You can make your own casserole recipe mix with just a few ingredients you’re likely to have in the store cupboard and you can switch around the flavours to suit yourself.

Basic Casserole Recipe Mix

For the basic casserole recipe mix which serves four people, you just need hot stock – made from a stock cube, tomato puree, a pinch of dried mixed herbs and salt and pepper.

Easy huh? And it takes literally one minute to mix up.

How To Make Basic Casserole

Basic Casserole Ingredients

  • homemade casserole mix sauce
  • 500g meat/chicken or 8 sausages
  • 2 sticks celery
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 onion
  • optional – mushrooms, tinned tomatoes, tinned beans

To put the casserole together just brown the meat, add it to the casserole dish with the chopped vegetables and pour over the homemade casserole sauce.

Cook the casserole in the oven on 180C for approximately 1 1/2 – 2 hours until the meat is cooked through.

If after cooking your casserole needs a little thickening up, just add a tsp of cornflour to a drop of cold water and mix to a loose paste – stir this through the casserole and cook for a few minutes longer to allow it to thicken.

Make the casserole mix your way

Take our basic mix above and make it your own! Try…

  • If you’re adding more meat, add more stock too or your casserole will be a little dry.
  • Try adding tinned tomatoes to your casseroles, this will add volume and depth of flavour.
  • Add spice with a pinch of chilli flakes or scatter freshly chopped chillies over the top when serving.
  • Add paprika for a warming autumn goulash vibe.
  • Stretch your casserole to feed more people and add a tin of beans (we like baked beans stirred through a pork or sausage casserole….)

What to serve with casserole

A lovely warming casserole is delicious served with

  • fluffy boiled rice
  • buttery pasta
  • crusty bread for dipping in
  • add a green vegetable side dish too – try peas or green beans
