The nights are turning colder, the days are shorter and I’m spending a whole lot more time day dreaming about my perfect winter home….
I’m thinking it’s tucked up in a quaint little village in Norway, set against a forest backdrop… as you walk down the little path, snow is resting softly up against the house, fir trees sits snuggled in wicker basket, lit with a string of white lights, candles softly flicker inside the storm lanterns that light the pathway, a star light hangs over the thick, strong wooden door. Push that door open, take off your heavy boots and come on in.
The house is warm and cosy, a roaring fire is burning brightly in the stone hearth, the living room oozes hygge, snuggle up on the big squashy sofa, wrap yourself in a warm woollen blanket, the wooden coffee table is crowded with flickering candles, glasses of mulled wine and plates of gingerbread. Little faces shine in the firelight.
There’s a reading nook, it’s piled with cushions and throws, the perfect place to spend time snuggling up lost in a book, wrapped up warm listening to the storm blow outside.
Hungry? Then come into the kitchen, squash together on the wooden benches and gather around my table, I’m serving up a slowly cooked stew, a rich stew, simmered in red wine and herbs, the scent makes your mouth water… thick cut farmhouse bread, slathered in creamy white butter is waiting by your bowl, ready to mop up the juices. An apple and blackberry crumble has just been lifted from the oven and stands patiently on the table, just waiting to be soaked with thick creamy fresh custard.
Feeling tired? Then amble up the rickety wooden stairs to the quaint little bedroom, draw the thick curtains over the window, pull back the covers and snuggle deep into the bed and oh that bed, the fresh, luxurious, beautiful Julian Charles bedding wraps itself around you. Pull up the throw and settle down for the night. The twinkly string lights, gently cast a star-y glow as you drift soundly off to sleep.
And you know when you wake, the smell of freshly cooked cinnamon pastries will waft gently up the stairs and fresh coffee is waiting on the kitchen table….
Ahhh I do love a winter dream house.
