Natural Spider Repellent - How To Keep Spiders Out Of The House

It's that time of year again.... Autumn!

The season when spiders seem to want to head indoors and if like me your arachnophobia goes into overdrive, then here's some great natural spider repellent ideas that don't involve a whole lot of toxic chemicals.

Natural Ways To Keep Spiders Out Of Your House

Yes. It's spider season!

Now I know spiders are good, they eat pests, I get that. But if like me you'd rather they didn't come inside the house, and you'd like to keep them away here's a few natural spider deterrent ideas you can try.

Natural Spider Repellent Methods

Spider Deterrent - Keep Things Tidy!

When looking at how to deter spiders a really important thing to do is to keep your house tidy and clean!

Grab the vacuum cleaner and thoroughly clean your home. Pay special attention to the corners, any cracks and crevices, around bins and be sure to vacuum under the furniture regularly, disturb any dark corners where spiders might get cosy and start a spider infestation!

If your home has attics and basements these are areas that really attract the spider population! Keep these rooms clean and tidy!

This is one of the easiest and most effective spider repellent methods!

Natural Spider Deterrent - Conkers!

I don't think it's any coincidence that conkers are in abundance during spider season - mother nature wants to help you out right?

Collect up some conkers and pop them around your home. Place them on windowsills, in corners anywhere a spider might lurk.

The old wives tale has it that conkers deter spiders.

Remember that conkers are poisonous to cats and dogs, so if your pets are the type that just can't leave stuff alone, you might want to skip this spider repellent method!

Use Eucalyptus To Repel Spiders

It's a well know that spiders and insects hate the scent of eucalyptus, so use this to your advantage.

You can either dot eucalyptus essential oil onto cotton wool balls (this isn't safe if you have pets or young children, as its toxic to dogs and cats) or you can grow eucalyptus plants indoors at home. It would be a good idea to place them near doors or windows, to deter spiders!

We like to burn eucalyptus in an oil burner in the hallway during spider season. But take care to keep it well out of the way of children and pets.

Use Essential Oils And Incense

Spiders are also reported to not like the scent of lavender. So now would be a great time to burn lavender essential oils and incense sticks at home.

The benefit of this method is that it also helps to create a relaxing atmosphere for you too. (again, keep essentials oils and incense out of the way of children and pets)

It's also a good idea to use tea tree essential oil, known for its insect repellent properties, known to repel ticks, fleas and spiders! Tea tree oil, is a good oil to use in bathrooms and toilets. (again keep away from children and pets)

Another essential oil hated by spiders is cloves. Use this by windows or doors to keep spiders at bay. (again, keep away from children and pets)

Homemade Spider Spray - Natural Spider Repellent

Spiders are supposed to HATE peppermint! So I mix up my own spider deterrent spider spray!

To mix up my peppermint oil spiders killer spray I use a spray bottle and mix up 200ml warm water, a small squeeze of Ecover washing up liquid and 10 drops of peppermint oil and a splash of white vinegar.

I spray this wherever I think a spider might want to live! And especially around external doorways.

Be sure to do a test spray patch first though! I can't guarantee it won't mark or stain any surface which it falls onto.

Once mixed use the spray within 2 days. Remember that peppermint oil is poisonous for pets so don't spray it anywhere they're likely to ingest it.

Clean Your Home With Lemon-Scented Cleaners

Spiders do not like strong scents and citrus is one of them. Invest in some store-bought citrus scented cleaners for your home, or mix up your own homemade cleaners using fresh lemon or lemon oil. I like to add a couple of drops of lemon oil to my mopping water along with dish soap and tea tree oil.

Not only will your home be clean but it will be filled with lovely fresh citrus scents too.

Spider Killer - Get A Cat!

Get a cat. They see a big spider as something to catch and kill.

Spider Repellent - Weather Seal Strips

When looking at how to keep spiders out of the house, making sure you have weather seal strips on your external doorways is a good idea.

Not only does it stop spiders crawling under the external doors and into the house it also cuts down on heat loss from your home.

Natural Spider Repellent - Cinnamon

Sprinkle ground cinnamon around your entrances, burn cinnamon essential oil or bake loads of cinnamon cookies!

My grandma swore by cinnamon as a natural spider repellent!

Again... if you've got pets you might want to keep the cinnamon away from where they might ingest it.

Natural Spider Repellent - Garlic

Garlic and onions are a scent that spiders do not like. So it's a good idea to use these in the in the kitchen to help deter spiders entering.

Spider Catcher

If you do spot a spider in your home and like me you can't pick it up then try a humane spider catcher to catch the spider so you can release it outside.

You can also buy plug in ultrasonic pest repeller which works against mice, spider and flies and is pet safe.
