ingredients for pizza toast on a white table - once Mutti pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella, sliced pepperoni, dried oregano and slices of thick rustic bread
  • Bread – you’ll need 1-2 slices of bread per person, you can use any bread you like. We like to use thick cut rustic white bloomer style bread.
  • Pizza Sauce – we usually use Mutti pizza sauce but you can use any jar or tin of sauce or marinara sauce you like.
  • Shredded Mozzarella – we buy this in bags ready to use so it’s quicker. You could swap it for shredded Cheddar cheese or dice up a ball of mozzarella instead.
  • Pepperoni – my kids love pepperoni, but it’s an easy swap to make these with ham, chorizo or tuna.
  • Dried Oregano – we sprinkle over some dried oregano before grilling. It just adds that pizza taste.

Prep Time – 5 minutes / Cook Time 7-8 minutes

Step by step instructions below

pizza toast on a baking tray
  1. Preheat the grill to high.
  2. Line a sheet pan or baking sheet with baking paper (parchment paper) and place the slices of bread onto the baking tray.
  3. Top each slice of bread with around a tablespoon of pizza sauce and shredded mozzarella.
  4. Add the pepperoni and sprinkle over the dried oregano. If you want to add salt do so here.
  5. Cook the pizza toast under the grill for around 7-8 minutes or until the cheese is melted, and the pepperoni (or other toppings) heated through.

Bread – you can use any bread you like – wholegrain, wholemeal, French bread, muffins, rye or even bagels.

Cheese – you can add any extra cheeses you like and go double-cheese or you can swap the mozzarella cheese for Cheddar, provolone, blue cheese – anything you like on a pizza you can throw on your pizza toast.

You can absolutely load these up with any pizza toppings you love to eat. Some of our favourites include chicken and sweetcorn, chorizo and chilli jam, tuna, bell peppers and black olive, feta cheese and roasted vegetables, ham and pineapple or pesto and mushroom.

And if you are feeling fancy top your pizza toast with torn fresh basil leaves, some fresh burrata and a drizzle of garlic infused olive oil.

⭐ Spread the sauce and the cheese right to the edges, so that the toast doesn’t burn.

⭐ Bake instead of grill – just bake in the oven at 200C for around 10 minutes (or until cooked)

⭐ Choose wholegrain or sourdough bread for a healthier twist.

Pizza Toast In The Oven Or Air Fryer

You can cook the pizza toast in the oven on 200C for around 10 minutes or until it's cooked thorugh properly.

Alternatively you can air fry at 180C for around 6-7 minutes. If you do airfry the pizzas make sure you really squash the toppings into the bread as the air fryer fan can whizz them off!
