Mince And Potato Pie Ingredients

You’ll just need a handful of tasty ingredients to make our easy mince and potato pie

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion – diced
  • 1 carrot – peeled and diced
  • 500g minced beef – buying tip – opt for a 10-15% fat pack of mince, rather than low fat, as the fat adds in some extra flavour.
  • 1 heaped tbsp plain flour
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 800g waxy potatoes – peeled and diced into small bitesized pieces
  • 1 beef stock pot
  • 320g puff pastry sheet – ready rolled
  • 1 egg – beaten
  • pinch salt
  • pinch black pepper

How To Make Mince And Potato Pie

It’s super easy to make this big tasty pie

Step One – fry the onions

  • Add the olive oil to a large saucepan over a medium heat – add the onions and a pinch of salt and fry for 5 minutes so they start to soften.

Step Two – brown the minced beef

  • Then tip in the minced beef and break it up in the pan, sprinkle in the dried thyme, fry for five minutes in with the onions so it browns.
  • Then stir in the plain flour and cook it for a couple of minutes.

Step Three – add the carrots and potatoes

  • Tip the carrots and potatoes into the pan and stir them into the mince and onions.

Step Four – add the beef stock pot

  • Stir in the beef stock pot and add just enough boiling water to cover the meat and potatoes.
  • Season with salt and black pepper.

Step Five cook the mince and potato pie filling

  • Bring the pan to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer on low with the lid on for 20 minutes.

Step Six – put together the mince and potato pie

  • Top with the pastry sheet, brush over with the beaten egg.

Step Seven – bake the mince and potato pie in the oven

  • Bake in the oven for around 30 minutes or until the pastry is puffed up and golden.

Step Eight – serve

  • Remove from the oven and serve with your favourite side dishes.

Recipe Tips And Ingredient Swaps And Add-Ins

You can give this mince and potato pie your own twist with some ingredient swaps and add-ins

Add more vegetables – you can add in some frozen peas, bulk up the minced beef with a can of lentils, or add some diced swedes or parsnips.

Different pie topper – you can switch the puff pastry lid for shortcrust pastry, mashed potatoes or even sliced potato topping. Or top the pie with mashed vegetables – a mix of squash, sweet potato and carrots works well.

Make it gluten-free – swap the flour and pastry lid for glute-free alternatives and be sure that other ingredients used are labelled gluten free too.

A super easy filling minced beef and potato pie - great for warming up with on a cold day.

Ingredients

  • 1 carrot - peeled and diced
  • 500g minced beef
  • 1 heaped tbsp plain flour
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 800g waxy potatoes - peeled and diced into small bitesized pieces
  • 1 beef stock pot
  • 320g puff pastry sheet - ready roleld
  • 1 egg - beaten
  • pinch salt
  • pinch black pepper

Instructions

  6. Season with salt and black pepper.
  7. Bring the pan to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer on low with the lid on for 20 minutes.
  8. Then preheat the oven to 200C / 400F /Gas Mark 6
