What Is Root Mash Made Of?
It’s basically mashed potatoes, mashed together with whatever root vegetables you like. Adding seasoning like salt, pepper or herbs adds some extra flavour.
And mashing with butter makes it just a little extra delicious!

- Chopping board
- Vegetable knife
- Saucepan with a lid
- Colander
- Masher
Root Veg Mash Ingredients
You’ll just need your favourite root veggies to make this tasty vegetable side dish!
- 500g potatoes – peeled and cut into chunks ready to boil
- 3 carrots – peeled and chopped into batons
- 2 parsnips – peeled and chopped into batons
- 1/2 swede – peeled and chopped into chunks
- 2 sweet potatoes – peeled and chopped into chunks
- 2 tbsp milk – you can swap this for cream if you prefer
- 50g butter – you can swap this for a tbsp of olive oil if you prefer
- Pinch salt
- Pinch black pepper
How To Make Root Veg Mash
You’ll just LOVE how simple our veggie mash is to make, nothing complicated – just great tasting rustic food! It’s a great vegetable side dish.
Step One – prepare and cook the root vegetables
- Peel and chop all the vegetables.
- Place them into a saucepan and cover with cold water. Pop the lid on.
- Bring the pan to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for around 20 minutes or until all the vegetables are tender when you price them with a fork.
- Once cooked, drain the root veg using the colander, then return them to the saucepan for mashing.
Step Two – mash up the root vegetable mash
- Pour the milk into the pan with the drained vegetables and add the butter.
- Season well with salt and cracked black pepper.
- Using a masher, mash all the veggies together to a lovely buttery pulp.
- Then serve the veg, swede and potato mash with your favourite meal.
