Deliciously sweet – our tasty herby sprouts with bacon makes the perfect side dish for any dinner. Our sprout recipe is really easy to prepare and cook, making them a great side dish for Christmas Dinner or Thanksgiving Dinner.
How to cook Brussel Sprouts with Bacon and Maple Syrup to go with Christmas Dinner
It’s super simple to make this tasty sprout recipe – first – peel the outer layer from the sprouts and leave them to soak for about 30 minutes in a bowl of salted water – then rinse them clean in a colander.
Next roughly chop and shred the sprouts – you don’t need to be neat here – chopping the sprouts into at least quarters just means they’ll cook a whole lot faster.
Next up – take a large skillet style pan – add a splash of olive oil and knob of butter – we want both for that luxurious, rich taste – then fry your chopped bacon gently. Next add a clove of chopped garlic and the shredded spouts and herbs – gently stir fry them for a couple of minutes.
Next I pour over about 100ml of white wine or water (you can choose whichever) pop the lid on the pan and just braise gently over a low heat for around 5-8 minutes or until the sprouts are tender.
Then turn the heat high – drizzle over the maple syrup and briskly stir fry so the sprouts go all sticky and delicious. Test the seasoning and add salt and black pepper as required. Tip into a serving bowl and eat.
Brussel Sprouts with Bacon Recipe
Brussel Sprouts with Bacon and Maple Syrup – Christmas Dinner Side Dish
- 1 tbs Olive Oil
- 25 g Butter
- 1 Clove Garlic peeled and finely chopped
- 6 Slices Smoked Bacon fat removed and chopped into squares
- 600g Brussel Sprouts washed, peeled and chopped into quarters
- 1 tbs Chopped Fresh Thyme Leaves
- 100 ml White Wine (or just use water)
- 1 tbs Maple Syrup
- Add the butter and olive oil to a large frying pan or skillet
- Gently fry the bacon bits for around 5 minutes – then add the garlic, shredded sprouts and thyme leaves – gently fry for about 3-4 minutes.
- Pour in the wine (or water) and then gently braise with the lid on over a low heat for around 5-8 minutes or until the sprouts are softened. Just keep an eye on the sprouts you may need to add a little more liquid if they start to dry out.
- Remove the lid, turn up the heat, drizzle over the maple syrup and fry briskly to burn off any excess liquid and allow the sprouts to pick up a sweet caramelised taste.
- Taste the sprouts and season with salt and black pepper as required. Tip into a serving dish to serve.
