Spicy Prawn Rice Ingredients

You’ll just need a handful of ingredients to make this quick and easy spicy rice recipe.

spicy prawn rice ingredients on a white table ready to cook with - pasta, defrosted cooked prawns, mug of rice, green pepper chopped, onion chopped, saucer of spices and small bowl of olive oil

For the spicy prawn rice

  • 200g Frozen cooked prawns – remember to defrost these as per the packet instructions prior to cooking
  • 1 cup rice – I do sometimes cheat with the rice and buy a couple of packs of microwave rice just to save not only time, but having to wash an extra pan…
  • 1 tbs olive oil – feel free to swap this for sunflower or rapeseed oil if you prefer
  • 1 onion – diced
  • 1 green pepper – diced
  • 500g passata – I use one with added garlic and Italian herbs, for extra flavour
  • 2 tsp Cajun seasoning
  • Salt and cracked black pepper – to season to taste

To serve

  • 4 tbs natural yogurt
  • small bunch coriander – chopped

How to make spicy prawn rice

When using frozen cooked prawns you should defrost them as per the packet instructions so they’re ready to use in your prawn dish

  • Cook the rice – just follow the packet instructions. Whilst the rice cooks get on with making the spicy prawn sauce.
  • Add the olive oil to a large pan and sauté the onion and peppers – cook them for around 5 minutes until they’re softening.
  • Add the passata – to the onions and peppers and tip in the Cajun seasoning and stir well.
  • Add the defrosted cooked prawns – when the rice has 5 minutes left to cook add the prawns to the spicy tomato sauce and cook for around 5-6 minutes or until they’ve heated through completely. Season the prawn sauce with salt and black pepper to your liking.

  • Serve – I tip the spicy prawn rice into a large serving bowl, serve alongside the natural yogurt and chopped coriander and let everyone help themselves. I usually add a side of vegetables too – I just use a bag of frozen ones for speed.
