How To Make Steak Chili

You’ll really like how simple this steak chili is to prepare and cook

Oven Method – how to cook steak chili in the oven

Step One – preheat the oven

  • Preheat the oven to 350F / 180C

Step two – brown the steak

  • Toss the diced chuck steak in the flour so it’s all coated with a light dusting. Add the olive oil to an ovenproof skillet pan and fry the stew meat until it starts to brown on the outside. Add the herbs and spices and mix well.

Step Three – add the rest of the steak chili ingredients

  • Tip in the diced onions, peppers and celery. Add the crushed tomatoes, honey and kidney beans. Give everything a good mix together. Then pour in around 7oz (200ml) boiling water. Season with salt and black pepper.

Step Four – cook the steak chili in the oven

  • Put the lid on the pan and then cook the chili in the oven for around 2 hours 45 minutes or as long as it takes for the chuck steak to be beautifully tender and melt in the mouth.
  • Check on the stew after around 1 hour 45 and top up with boiling water or beef broth if its looking a little dry. Then continue to cook until tender.

Step Five – serve the beef chili

  • Once cooked through, remove from the oven and serve with your favourite chili side dishes.

Slow Cooker Method – no browning needed

Chuck steak (braising steak) always cooks really well in the Crock-pot and comes out super tender and pull apart. We don’t brown the steak when we cook in the slow cooker. This is one of those super easy recipes you can just dump, stir and cook!

When adding the boiling water – reduce this to around 3oz (around 100ml)

  • Add all the ingredients to the slow cooker bowl, mix well – cook on low for around 8 hours or until the steak is super tender and pull-apart.
  • Thickening your steak chili. Sometimes slow cooker dishes need thickening, do this by adding a couple of teaspoons of cornflour to a cup, mixing into a paste with a drop of cold water. Stir this through the chili and cook for around 5 minutes, to thicken the sauce.
  • Then serve with your favourite steak chili side dishes. I love this with homemade cornbread and a big dollop of sour cream, and a sprinkling of grated Cheddar cheese.

How To Store, Reheat And Use Up Leftover Steak Chili

How To Store Steak Chili

Our delicious beef chili can be cooled, and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Or freeze in a suitable container in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Defrost the chili thoroughly before reheating. I usually defrost it in the fridge overnight.

How To Reheat Steak Chili

Pour the steak chili into a saucepan and reheat on the hob, over a low to medium heat. Stirring every so often. Heat until the chili is a minimum of 75C throughout.

Alternatively reheat in the microwave – pour chili into suitable microwavable container, heat on high for 2 minutes, stir carefully, then continue to heat and stir after every 2 minutes of heating, until heated properly throughout to a minimum of 75C.

How To Use Up Leftover Steak Chili

You can use up leftover steak chili to fill savoury hand-pies (pasties), or use as a cottage pie filling and make a Mexican Cottage Pie topped with cheesy nacho mash! Or you could turn it into dirty rice, and simple reheat and stir through some cooked rice, sprinkle with grated cheese and plenty of chopped fresh herbs and a scattering of chopped green chiles.
