Our Ultimate Guide to sandwich fillers will help you create delicious, tasty and exciting sandwiches that will leave you looking forward to your lunch break every single day.

There are countless types of bread to choose from when making up your sandwiches, ranging from classic soft white sandwich loaf or wholewheat to slightly fancier options such as focaccia or sourdough.

Other types of bread that are great for sandwiches include rye bread, pumpernickel, ciabatta, French baguette, soft buttery brioche, multigrain, and whole-grain bread. Each of these breads brings its own distinct flavor and texture to your sandwich creations.

Don’t forget that you can make GREAT sandwiches using tortilla wraps, pitta bread, and flatbreads. These delicious options really help to add some variety to your lunch menu, with their soft and flexible textures making them perfect for wrapping around your favourite fillings.

It’s a great idea to use different breads when making up sandwiches, especially if you’re packing them for a take to work lunch, or school lunchbox. It’s good to have variety and it stops lunch getting dull and boring.

Plus… don’t forget toasted sandwiches! For a warm and crispy sandwich, try using toasted bread such as a toasted bagel, English muffin or even just throwing your favourite bread into the toaster for extra crunch.

And of course, you can turn your sandwich into a melt, really easily by adding your favourite cheeses and then cooking either under the grill, in a panini press or toasted sandwich maker, or even in the air fryer!

Tips For Making Sandwiches For Picnics An Lunchboxes

How to stop sandwiches going soggy?

Butter – Okay, first up, I always add a good, generous layer of butter, right to the edges. It stops the moist foods soaking into the bread.

Cheese – Secondly, if you’re using cheese, place this next to the bread and then the salad and meats in-between the two pieces of cheese lined bread.

Toast the bread – Toasting the bread and allowing it to cool thoroughly seems to help with stopping soggy sandwiches.

Pack filling separately – If it’s a really moist filling – like tuna mayo or egg mayo maybe plan to pack it separately from the bread, so it can be tipped on just before eating.

Use wraps instead of bread – And again, add a layer of cheese next to the wrap, with the fillings inside the cheese.

Tomatoes… it’s best to remove the seeds from tomatoes, before adding to the sandwiches. And dry salad properly before adding the sandwiches.

How to pack sandwiches in a lunchbox

We always use thermo sandwich boxes that have been stored in the fridge, so they’re already cold. Then we add the sandwiches – wrapped in a layer of parchment paper, then foil.

We always add ice-packs to the lunchbox and I usually add tube yogurts that have been frozen too as little extra ice-packs.

It’s super important to keep sandwiches properly cool to avoid food poisoning.

Sides that go great with a sandwich for lunch

  • mini pots of salad
  • veggie sticks and dip pots
  • hummus and breadsticks
  • crisps
  • fruit
  • yogurts

Turning Sandwiches Into An Easy Dinner Idea!

If I’m tired or had a super busy day, then I’m always happy to make sandwiches for dinner. I usually make up whatever the current fave is, which is usually chicken, bacon and avocado, done club style.

Then I add some sides. I tend to make waffle fries in the air fryer – just use a bag of freezer chips, for speed! Then I’ll add coleslaw and dill pickles on the side.

Or if it’s a cold day, I might serve grilled cheese sandwiches and make a pot of soup to go alongside, and if I’m all out of time to make the soup – I use the cartons of fresh soup from the supermarket. Tomato and basil alongside a grilled cheese is a pretty great weeknight dinner when you’re cold, hungry and tired!
