DIY Plant Pots With Empty illy Coffee Tins
We just can't resist using the empty illy coffee tins as DIY plant pots for herbs and if you fancy making one, you'll only need four things!
If you do lots of Italian cooking like we do here at Daisies & Pie, then you'll probably be growing your own herbs.
And if there's one thing we love it's a little illy coffee tin herb planter. They're super quick to make and look really nice lined up on the kitchen windowsill bursting with herbs that are ready to pick and use.
The Illy tins are really handy too, because the pot sits snugly in it's own lid, so drainage is no problem.
Our DIY herb planters are super practical and you'll only need a few things to make them!
What You'll Need For A DIY Plant Pot
- Empty coffee tins - we use the illy coffee tins as we love the designs
- Herb or rocket seeds - or for an instant herb garden you could get yourself some supermarket growing herbs.
- A handful of compost
- Hammer & nail
How To Make A DIY Plant Pot
You'll LOVE how simple these little DIY herb planters are to make using empty illy coffee tins!
Step One - wash out your coffee tins
- Give the coffee tins a wash to remove any coffee bits.
Step Two - make drainage holes in the base of your DIY plant pot
- Turn the can upside down and holding it very steady so it doesn't slip, gently tap a small nail into the base of the can a few times. These drainage holes will allow the water to come out freely.
Gardeners Note! Some people prefer not to grow plants directly in a can as they worry about contamination in the soil. So if you prefer you can find a small plastic plant pot to slip inside the empty coffee can instead rather than planting directly into the can.
Step Three - fill the DIY plant pot with compost
- Add compost to the plant pot
Step Four - plant the seeds and grow
- Scatter the seeds into the compost (or plant your growing herbs).
- Water at the base of the plants, not too much as they don't like to be in soggy.
Step Five - pick the herbs and use in your recipes
- You can pick off the herbs to use whenever they are ready. Just remember to keep on scattering seeds to keep up a continual supply.
